The European project Digital Treasures organised the Workshop “Innovation on new digital exponential technologies in the archives” which took place on 2-3 September 2021 in Alicante (Spain). The event aimed to generate added value, visibility and economic profitability of European archives and had a variety of speakers from national archives, universities and other institutions from the cultural sector.

Artem Reshetnikov, Research Engineer from the CASE Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center presented the talk “What AI can bring to GLAM? Experience of Saint George on a Bike project” which was based on the enrichment of metadata of Cultural Heritage Objects using Deep Learning.

During his presentation, Reshetnikov introduced the project, its motivation and how it is able to apply object detection in paintings. Moreover, he explained how the project uses a language model to refine object class detection and showcased examples of images. He also talked about the challenges of Saint George on a Bike such as the small dataset of paintings by data mining standards that requires complementary techniques to filter out anachronisms and detect imaginary objects or actions.

After the talk, there was a round of questions and an exchange of opinions between the audience and the speaker which greatly enriched the presentation and generated some discussion among all attendees.
